چکیده

Article history: Received 1 August 2009 Accepted 15 September 2009 Financial and accounting tasks require high levels of concentration as well as cognitive capacity. Today, advanced technology can help facilitate the effective and efficient completion of such tasks. At the same time, however, these same technologies can interrupt work flow and create work-related stress, thus having a deleterious effect on task performance. These interruptions can be characterized across a number of different dimensions, including frequency, complexity, duration, and relevance to the primary task, to name a few. This study examines the effects of interruption frequency, task complexity, and individual characteristics on cognitive load and subsequent decisionmaking performance on financial tasks. As hypothesized, the results indicate the significant influence of interruption frequency and order of task complexity on cognitive load which influences performance. This research has implications on the design and use of information systems by accounting professionals in order to reduce potential negative effects. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Workflow and Performance Under Computer Mediated Interruptions

Technologically enhanced computer mediated communication (CMC) environments create a trade-off between eliminating delays and increasing performance. In such environments, incoming interruptions can break the “flow” of work and deteriorate performance. In this regard, we describe a mechanism that explains why particular types of information are attended to, and how such interruptions interrupt ...

Technology Mediated Interruptions: The Effects of Task and Interruption Characteristics on Decision-Making

Interruptions are uncontrollable attention breakers that create stress in the work environment. Past literature has shown that interruptions impair performance. This study examines two common interruption characteristics; frequency and complexity, and investigates their effect on decision-making performance by employing cognitive fit theory (Vessey, 1991), distraction conflict theory (Baron, 19...

The Influence of Task Interruption on Individual Decision Making: An Information Overload Perspective

Interruptions are a common aspect of the work environment of most organizations. Yet little is known about how intemptions and their characteristics, such as frequency of occurrence, influence decision-making performance of individuals. Consequently, this paper reports the results of two experiments investigating the influence of interruptions on individual decision making. Interruptions were f...

Please Do Not Disturb: Managing Interruptions And Task Complexity

The increasing use of computer-mediated communication (CMC) by knowledge workers in problemsolving environments intensifies the need for empirical evidence on the effects of interruption on users’ problem-solving performance. Email and instant messaging are common desktop and mobile applications that frequently seek the user’s attention via audible and visual cues. This study is concerned with ...
